Sailing course Coastal Skipper RYA

The RYA Coastal Skipper sailing course, is not a beginner’s course, is an course for experienced sailors, that teaches you to skipper a yacht by day or night, on longer, more complex passages anywhere in the World. Priority of RYA Coastal Skipper course, to learn take charge on boat, plan passages and make decisions.

Prerequisites: person have minimum sea time of 15 days, 2 days as skipper, and covered 300 miles, with 8 night hours, before enrollment. Together we will build this experience during course.

During the course you will also complete RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster theory course. Course consist of two parts theoretical and practical. The practical part, is a satisfying, but intensive course of 5 days, with other cadets working together. Completion of RYA Coastal Skipper practical means you have the knowledge and understanding. Many holders of the RYA Coastal Skipper Certificate of Competence prepare for and take examination for the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster™ Coastal Certificate of Competence.

Living Aboard

You not share a cabin, or sleep in the saloon, you booking a separate double cabin, but share a common space with other students. Candidates throughout the course will live, full time aboard a yacht.

At this time, we go to different bays, vilages and anchorages in the Ionian Islands. We will work out various sailing techniques. And during transitions, pilot skills.

You can enjoy great on-board cuisine, on the yacht. For this there is everything you need. Or enjoy evening meals, which are taken in local tavernas ashore. With couple showers and toilets on the boat, you are free from the coast.

You can book a boat privet, if you want to learn with friends or family.

Sailing course Coastal Skipper Theoretical

40 hours based course, during which we will go through, navigation, sailing, meteorology, rules of the road, safety at sea, navigation in restricted visibility, passage planning.

5 days at sea, 100 miles, 4 night sailings. We will learn to turn the theoretical knowledge we have accumulated, into practice.

Preparation for sea
Awareness of safety equipment, required for offshore passages. Preparation of yacht for going to sea including: engine and equipment checks, safety briefing, stowage, watch keeping, delegating responsibilities.

Planning passage
Plan coastal passage, regarding the boat capability, navigation, weather condition, places of refuge, tidal heights and streams, required publications, customs procedures.

Pilotage
Preparation of pilotage plan, taking in consideration of transits, clearing bearings, surroundings, buoyage, regulations of ports and harbors. Piloting a boat, by day and night.

Skipper ability and making passage
Taking charge on boat and managing the crew. Organisation of: deck work and domestic duties of a yacht on passage. Awareness of influence, a meteorological trends on navigation. Welfare of crew on passage. Use electronic navigation for planning and making, a passage, with help of routes and way points.

Handling boat under sail
Using the sails to control the boat and efficiently sail, on all points of sailing. Mooring or anchoring under sail, in different conditions of wind.

Handling boat under power
Controlling boat under power. Different berthing or underthings, regarding conditions of wind.

Rogue conditions of weather
Heavy weather preparation, boat handling at strong winds. Navigation in restricted visibility.

Situations of emergency
Man overboard recovery, under sail or power. Procedures, when abandoning to life raft. Steps on lifeboat or helicopter rescues.
